Operation Grand Site

Set in a typically Mediterranean landscape, reminiscent of lands in other parts of the world, and a stage on the Arles road in the pilgrimage to Compostela, the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert nestles in its preserved valley.
Gellone valley
Gellone valley

Built among the stones, pine groves and olive trees, the village spreads out from the 9th century Abbey of Gellone, a masterpiece of Romanesque art and part of UNESCO world heritage, the nerve centre of the village. Considered one of the most beautiful villages of France, with its narrow, winding alleys lined with stone houses decorated with arches and geminated windows, the village has managed to preserve its medieval identity.

All around Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Mediterranean vegetation and white limestone rock extend across an area of fragrant, untamed hills, a treasure box of distinctive places such as the Cirque de l’Infernet, Clamouse cave, the Hérault gorges or the 11h century pont du Diable (Devil’s bridge), giving the site as a whole its particular spirit.

Further away, in the Languedoc hinterland, the 4 municipal gateways to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Aniane, Montpeyroux, Puéchabon and Saint-Jean-de-Fos, each unveil their charms. The Causse de Montcalmès and the vineyards of the plain clothe the area in its characteristic finery, adding to the style of these typically Languedocian villages.

The keystone of the « new» Grand Site, the future welcome centre at the pont du Diable, will be supported by a veritable network of information spots and interpretation to accompany visitors every step of the way as they discover the site. The rich cultural heritage in the area will be enhanced by a true project of cultural tourism, including, in particular, the Maison de la Poterie (Pottery Centre) in Saint-Jean-de-Fos.
