Operation Grand Site : a multiannual action plan

Several studies were carried out (number of visits to the site, traffic circulation, parking…) and dialogues were held with OGS partners, leading to the formalization of a multiannual action plan, validated in 2004 by all the project partners.

5 main goals came out of the action plan, each divided up into concrete actions:

- Reorganisation of car traffic in the Hérault Gorges and Gellone valley: controlling excessive traffic flows which have a harmful effect on the image of the site – this is a priority goal for the Operation Grand Site.

- Enhancing outstanding sites, landscapes and monuments: considerable effort is directed at the presentation of village sites, whose tourist attraction should reduce peak visiting of the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert.

- Reasoned management of fragile rural spaces: submitted to activities that may be incompatible with the fragility of these natural environments, the site will benefit from extensive regulation, via open space maintenance, redevelopment of farming activities and implementation of a management plan for Outdoor Activities.

- Improving reception facilities and activities for tourists: a real cultural tourism project to give coherence to the new facilities and various events, such as discovery spots and learning workshops, based on themes of education about the environment and cultural heritage.

- Management and leadership of the Operation Grand Site: a key element in the success of the operation, the manager of the site will ensure protection and respect of the heritage of the site and its inhabitants, as well as long-term environmental, social and economic management, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
