An Operation Grand Site is a management approach proposed by the Ministry of Environment in response to the problem of degradation of a major national site.
Drafted by the DATAR in 1970 and revived in 1989, this policy relies on strong partnership with local elected representatives, and encompasses several goals:
to restore the site and sustain its physical balance, as well as the quality of its landscape and heritage,
to control tourist activity in terms of numbers and to improve the welcome to the public
to define a policy of maintenance and of sustainable and autonomous management (of the site, number of visitors, infrastructures)
to enable the adopted measures to benefit local development of the municipalities involved in these operations and to help to improve the local surroundings of the population.
The approach is conducted in three phases:
studies: diagnosis and analysis of the site and number of visits, to define a project of rehabilitation and enhancement,
undertaking the necessary work on restoring and upgrading the site,
management and maintenance of the site, equipment and events, to be ensured by a permanent structure
